So excited to announce that Tom and I are engaged!
Thank you all for your lovely comments on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, it means so much to us both.
Tom actually proposed on Friday evening but we decided to spend Saturday celebrating together and ensuring that our families and close friends knew our news before sharing on social media. I think Tom was quite shocked when I suggested waiting, considering I’m usually on social non-stop.
He proposed at the villa in Portugal, where we spend our Summer holidays each year. It was by the pool after dinner – I was wearing my ripped jeans, a tank, no make up and glasses on. That was pretty much all I said was ‘I can’t believe I look like this!’ although obviously I said yes!!
Apparently I kept Tom on one knee longer than he was expecting because I was so shocked. I mean we’ve talked about getting married but I didn’t think he’d propose right then and there with the Euro’s on in the background!
He’d bought a bottle of champagne, a bunch of flowers and hundreds of tea lights that he’d attempted to light around the perimeter of the pool however the wind had got the better of him and none of them were alight when he brought me out.
Tom proposed using my Granny’s engagement ring, which is the diamond and sapphire combination that I love. The ring is too big and a little old fashioned, so we’re going to get it reset. He’d also brought out two rings that his Mum had given him (apparently tradition states that the ring/diamond should come from the boy’s side of the family) so I’ve been wearing one of those this weekend! I feel very spoilt having 3 rings to choose from!
Because I looked so gross on Friday night – and we were preoccupied drinking champagne, and ringing family/friends, we went to the beach on Saturday night for dinner and so that we could take the photo to share on social. I had thought about recreating the ‘Follow Me To’ photo which I think worked really well, especially at sunset!
It was perfect to get engaged in Portugal, we both love this place and it now means even more to us (and especially since my beach wedding idea has been vetoed). We’re thinking about getting married next Summer in the UK with a fairly traditional church and marquee wedding! More to come…
Massive congratulations to you both! So exciting! 😀 How lovely that Tom proposed using your Granny’s ring too.
Sounds like Tom got it spot on with Portugal and the surprise element. My first words when Dan proposed were ‘Are you joking?’ , quickly followed by ‘Yes!’ Not quite the romantic response he was after I don’t think! Guys need to give us a second to take it all in before expecting us to construct a suitable response though! 😉
We got married in a church followed by a marquee reception during the Summer as well. Not sure if any of my blog posts will help with your planning? ( http://www.ahealthiermoo.com/index.php/wedding/ )
Thanks Mary! Will def have a look – can’t decide how much wedding stuff to blog about on here! I want to share but also want to keep it a surprise for our guests!
