When the alarm went off for Project Awesome yesterday at 5.20am I spent the first minute or so checking social media and looking at my emails (bad habit, I know). But one particular email caught my eye.
EEK! I have been counting down the days for the Tokyo Marathon ballot results to be released ever since my friend Cara had her good for age entry confirmed. I knew it was a long shot, but I am so excited to have got a place. The race is at the end of February, which only gives me a month off between Chicago race day and the start of Tokyo training but it will be worth it to run this iconic race.
Tokyo marathon is newest of the six Marathon Majors (and should be my fifth of the bunch if all goes to plan on 11th October) only joining in 2013. Next year will be the 10th anniversary race!
I’ve wanted to go to Japan for a while, and this will make the trip even better! I’m hoping the lure of a trip to Disneyland Tokyo will be enough to convince Tom to join me- that and the promise of some amazing skiing!
Congratulations but expensive trip! G.
Congrats on your lottery selection. I gave up my spot at Tokyo because my Tom thought it was crazy and I did get a spot for London. I can’t wait to read your recap. Going to Tokyo DL wil be fun too!
Haha congrats on your London place! I can’t wait to Tokyo Disney, contemplating running in Minnie costume again!
Congrats! Five out of the six majors already? That’s some going! I’ve run 8 marathons over five different courses, but London is my only marathon major. Absolutely loved the experience though!
EEEE! SO exciting! We’re going to Japan for our honeymoon, two month later, so it may be a few years before I can save up the dolla for another Tokyo trip – but i know I would love it. I’m kind of intrigued how Japanese people, so famously polite, are at jostling at the start line… please cover in your race report!
Of course I will! Plus I’ll be in Leeds a few weeks before on a hen do, would love to meet up for a run!
How do you get so lucky with lotteries? I just got turned down for Tokyo and have never managed to get any entry to a race with a lottery (and I’ve applied to dozens – NYC 7x, London 5x, Berlin 2x,etc)
I’ve actually only ever got into the Berlin & Tokyo ballots- I ran London for charity and New York with 2.09 events!
Only… 😛
Haha yes after re-reading perhaps I am lucky!! Keep entering and one day it will be your turn!
Congrats Charlie, that’s amazing! Does that only leave Boston?! You’ll get that qualifier time no problem and then you’ll have all 6! Can’t wait to see your progress, and photos from all the majors of course 🙂 x
Congrats!! That is so exciting 🙂 What a fabulous experience!!
Awesome! It will be so much fun, so exciting!!
Congratulations Charlie, that is quite exciting. I am really hoping to get to Boston before I am 70.

I’m sure you will!! Keep working!
So awesome! What a cool marathon to be able to run!
Wow- well done! I’m so super jealous, firstly of you doing another marathon (mine are on hold for a while…) and secondly that you get to go to Japan. Bex lived there for a year and it is my absolute favourite place to visit. You’ll have a great time xx
