The 5 D’s of Dodgeball

Feb 19, 2014 | Uncategorized | 1 comment

Dodge. Dip. Duck. Dive. Dodge.

When I got a text a few weeks ago from my friend Char asking if Tom and I wanted to join their dodgeball team, my first thought was ‘hell yeah’.

My second thought was, ‘what if I get hit in the face and cry?’ Of course we then watched the film for research- such a brilliant movie.

The tournament that we’re in has been going for 3 weeks already, but yesterday was the first time that Tom and I could play. The team was made up of a number of Char and Nick’s friends, most of whom we hadn’t met before. It was lovely to meet some new people, although there wasn’t much time for chatting. Our team actually had far more players than needed, with 15 of us and only 8 people able to play at once, 3 of whom had to be girls, so we were able to have rolling subs. Our team colours were black/grey- I think we need matching t-shirts like the team on before us!

The 5 Realities of Dodgeball

  • Cower
  • Jump
  • Scream
  • Scramble
  • Fumble

During one of our games I was the final player on our side left against 4 of them. I was terrified (mostly scared of getting hit in the face, luckily this was an unnecessary fear) and after 2 throws where I failed to get any of their team out, I fumbled a ball that they’d thrown and was out. Whoops. I actually thought I’d be more embarrassed about getting hit, but people were going out and in all the time so it didn’t really matter. There was real camaraderie between our team- much needed as the other team got a little over competitive.

With 3 sets of 5 games, it was really fast paced and the match flew by. I was actually quite glad we weren’t all having to play in every game. It was great fun, I guess with marathon training it’s just important that I’m careful not to roll an ankle or worse.

Oh and we won! It was really close and came down to the final game but we won 2 sets to 1!

Next week is fancy dress week, and we’re thinking about going as Noah and his ark of animals, or sailors/pirates with a captain! I’m already looking forward to it!

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!

I love dodgeball. It looks like fun.
