Speedwork Workouts for Marathon Training

Sep 6, 2014 | Running | 2 comments

I’ve had a lot of questions about speed work, either what to do, how fast to do it, or how to do it! Well first, check out my post on ‘How to do Speedwork without a Track’.

Below I’ve included some of the speed workouts that I’ve completed as part of my Berlin and New York marathon training. These are brilliant to include once a week in marathon and half marathon training. Mixing it up will keep you from getting bored, however it’s a great idea to repeat key workouts throughout training so you can see how you’re improving and progressing.

It’s really important to warm up properly before your speed workout (even more important than normal!!) Plus, if like me, you prefer to complete your sprints in the morning, ensure that you eat something and leave time for it to digest before your workout. You won’t perform at your best if you’re hungry.

Feel free to share or pin these workouts, or blog them as long as you link back to this post please! Thanks!

These are very helpful, thank you. I used to hate any kind of speed work but it’s definitely growing on me and I might even prefer it to long slow time-consuming runs 🙂

These all look vicious, I love it! You cracked me up with the first one – this workout may make you feel sick. Haha, oh dear, can’t wait to try it!
