Running Around Gosport

Running around Gosport

Every weekend this July I’ve been at a hen party or wedding, and this weekend was no exception. We were staying in Gosport for my friend Jo’s hen do in a huge house sleeping 18 of us. Usually this sort of weekend wouldn’t be conducive to exercise, however I have a couple of friends that are early birds like me and were keen to sweat off the gin during a short 4 mile run.

We snuck out of the house around 8.30am, leaving the rest of the girls sleeping off their hangovers and ran down to the water. I’d been warned that Gosport wasn’t the prettiest of towns, however we discovered some beauties on our sunny run along the water.

Portsmouth, just across the water was host to the America’s Cup this weekend so that place was packed with boats.

We ran from our house, down to the ferry terminal and along past the Navy hospital, around a pretty lake where kids were kayaking, and home via a coffee shop. Will run for coffee..always.

Our next activity of the hen was Go Karting – Jo loves Formula One and is a pretty good/ruthless driver so we thought she’d be good at it. We weren’t prepared for how aggressively she would drive around the track.  We had two sessions on the track of 15 mins each, the first 15 mins was to assess our lap times and put us into heats, then the second was for the places.

Our slower heat became pretty competitive, with 3 crashes within the first 5 minutes, before we settled down. I came fourth in our group – clearly I need to work on my speed! It was so hot on the track in our suits but we loved it. I think everyone woke up sore this morning after gripping the wheel so tightly!

Saturday night was donning our best Sailor fancy dress and hitting Portsmouth for a cheesy night out – I’m not sure we are the usual clientele at Loch Fyne. We danced the night away to old school classics before falling asleep in the taxi on the way home.

It’s got me thinking about my own hen – I think I want to go somewhere warm to hike, do yoga, run, sit by the pool/sea and drink rose! I’m not big on clubbing, and would rather crank up the music in a villa and dance like loons with my friends!

What would you want to do/did you do on your hen or stag?

Love that you still managed to get a run in whilst away on the hen!
My hen was in a little cottage with a pool during May the year before last. I’m not too keen on clubbing either, but we played lots of games at the cottage, went out for an ‘activities’ day (go karting, zorbing, archery, etc), and did some nude male model drawing in the city! My bridesmaids then also surprised me with a glamping trip a couple of weekends later with just them which was lovely.

I actually don’t want a hen do at all. People keep bringing up the subject and saying ‘we’ll have to do XYZ for your hen do’ and the thought just makes me cringe. I think perhaps it’s because when I go out usually I spend more time hanging out with my fiancé and the boys than with other girls.
I’m happy to just take my bridesmaids for a couple of spa treatments the day before the wedding, without having to call it a hen party.

Can not believe you were here in Gosport! You should have come to Lee on Solent’s parkrun!

My old stomping ground. Gosport ain’t so bad….when you know where to avoid. It looks like you had a great time and across the water. Well done on maintaining the fitness at the same time!

Ahh I used to live and went to college in Gosport! My dad was in the navy (tho we did live in the “posher” bit in Alverstoke…). You definitely picked the right bits to visit. Gunwharf is lovely!
