My Top 5 Running Moments

I saw this on someone else’s blog (although I am so sorry but I have completely forgotten where) but thought it was a fab idea, so I thought I’d share mine with you guys today.

New York Marathon

Here are my top 5 running moments;

1. Finishing the New York Marathon with a 36 minute PB. I had loved almost every minute of the race, and couldn’t quite believe that I’d just run through Central Park and earned my second marathon medal. Along the course I’d seen my parents, high fived Tom, and cried with pain/happiness at seeing Tom’s parents.

2. Running hand in hand across the London Marathon finish line with my friend Emily. It had been a real slog, but we’d made it. I thought I’d finish never wanting to run again, but luckily I just couldn’t stop thinking about running it faster next time- despite the huge blisters on my feet.

3. Running along the Thames with Tom on Valentine’s Day this year- it was his suggestion to run (which makes me SO happy), the sun was shining and we bumped into a friend on the Thames tow path too. After our run we made a big brunch before going to Twickenham to watch the rugby. Ideal Valentine’s Day!

4. Waddling over the finish line of the Berlin Marathon and hearing my friend shout my name from the VIP area to say well done. Just before he’d spotted me I’d been hunched over the fence, trying not to vom- obviously I styled this out when I realised he was watching! I then received a text from Lissy with my results- 10 mins faster than my goal time, and my first Sub 4 marathon.

5. Not exactly MY running moment, but during the London Marathon when Tom came over for a huge hug at mile 23. It was completely worth not running the marathon myself for that one moment. Closely followed by overhearing him telling friends that he wanted to run it again!

    1. The Pilgrim Marathon, my very first, just finishing was a relief and it turned into an ‘ultra’ as due to a marshaling direction error we all ran more than 26.2 miles.
    2. The Thames Trot (AKA The Boat Race) I got my first DNF as I got too cold and was stopped by snow but I still managed 40 miles.
    3. Being on support duty for my local Basingstoke Half Marathon, it was amazing seeing everyone start and then clapping everyone home, I felt very proud of my club that day.
    4. The Wokingham Half Marathon, I was struggling along at about mile 9 when Liz Yelling came back running the other way waving to everyone on her cool down lap, she wasn’t even sweating.
    5. The St Michaels Hospice 5K, I started at the back with all the other charity runners and just appreciated how lucky we all are to be fit enough to run.

      Wow I would be so annoyed if I had to run further than the 26.2! Plus being stopped by snow sounds like a very acceptable reason to stop!

    Great idea for a post – I might write one of these too. Mine would definitely feature both the London and Paris marathons but I’ll need to give it some careful thought!

    I love reading other runner’s favorite race memories! I did something like this at the end of last year for the races I’d ran that year.

    1) Coming round the corner during my first Disneyworld marathon and hearing the gospel choir – sob.
    2) Yelling ‘go bleeding nipples man’ when ‘supporting’ at Auckland marathon – we were trying to find distinguishing features to single people out and it just slipped out. This is why you need names on bibs.
    3) The only time I’ve ever broken an hour on a 10km – thank you downhill finish.
    4) Getting my Goofy challenge medal – the kid who would cry before sport at school just ran 39 miles in a weekend. Suck that PE teacher!
    5) My first black toenail – yep, I was finally a runner! I wore flip flops and no nail polish for weeks.
